Long Cane Primary School in Abbeville had a Title I Reading Night to help parents understand some of the teaching strategies being used to teach their children to read. At the 4 and 5 year old kindergarten night, the teachers modeled how to talk with your child about a book as you are reading to help your child build his or her reading comprehension. The kindergarten teachers also showed the parents how we use “blending” of letter sounds to teach students to read words through a Balanced Literacy Approach. Each student received a copy of If You Give A Dog A Donut by Laura Numeroff to enjoy at home with family. As an added treat, the 5 year old kindergarteners sang several songs.
